StandardsWork is a “do
tank.” Many challenges that affect students and schools
are national in scope and we are often invited to help government
leaders and other national organizations introduce fresh ideas
to longstanding or newly emerging challenges. Since we are rooted
in real on-the-ground work, we are able to advocate for effective
policies and practices that will both be well-received and have
the potential to create a positive impact on student performance
nationally.
“Raising the Standard is loaded with practical wisdom
about the demands and possibilities entailed in the never-ending
pursuit of becoming a standards-driven system of schools.” -Scott Thompson, Assistant Director, Panasonic Foundation

Examples
include:
- Participation as a consultant on the American Diploma
Project, a joint project of Achieve, Inc., The Education
Trust, and The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation. The American
Diploma Project, and subsequent work we did with Achieve
on redesigning the National Assessment of Educational Progress
(looking at how NAEP might report on 12th grade preparedness
for post-secondary education, work, and military service),
have involved StandardsWork in a significant way in the
debate about high school reform.
- Providing recommendations, as the result of field work
conducted on its behalf, to the National Assessment
Governing Board on ways to increase participation and
motivation by 12th graders on the NAEP. The recommendations are
resulting in substantial changes in the way information about NAEP is
communicated to the public.
- Completed a first-of-its kind review of the Virginia Standards
of Learning on behalf of the Virginia Department of
Education.
- Conducted a review of draft standards and provided recommendations
for creating more clarity and rigor to the Pennsylvania
Governors Commission on Academic Standards.
