Schools aren’t islands unto themselves; they are integral parts of a community. Their success depends on the support they receive from - and ownership that is felt by - parents, students, businesses, civic organizations, and political leaders. We work deep in the community to champion high expectations, empower parents, and teach community-based organizations how to become effective partners in the educational enterprise.

From its earliest days as the America 2000 Coalition, an advocacy project designed to get businesses and community groups to embrace the National Education Goals and to identify and implement best practices, StandardsWork has endeavored to engage the community in effective school reform efforts. Our best selling book, Raising the Standard: An Eight Step Action Guide for Schools and Communities, is a blueprint for individuals and organizations and is as powerful a tool today as it was six years ago when it was written. We champion these strategies today through our Parent Power Works project. Parent Power Works is an effort sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education that currently works to empower low income parents in Maryland and the District of Columbia to “Be the Power Behind your Child’s Education”. Working with community based organizations, we teach parents:

    • The fundamentals of school accountability.
    • The importance of alignment between standards, curriculum, instruction, and tests.
    • How to be effective advocates for accountability in their child’s school.
    • What specific rights the federal No Child Left Behind law provides them.
    • How to compare schools using state and national databases.
