Our Mission
For nearly fifteen years, StandardsWork, a nonprofit education
consultancy located in Washington, DC, has been working hand-in-hand
with school districts, state agencies and civic groups around
the country to improve student achievement. We are a mission-driven
organization that helps communities and the schools they support
transform a vision of academic success into a better standard
of education for all students.
Our Vision
To create communities across the country in which educators,
parents, business and civic leaders collaborate to achieve systemic
lasting change, higher education standards and improved results
for kids. |

We bring a fresh perspective and years
of experience helping schools and school systems break through
the barriers that inhibit student achievement. We find key leverage
points - and by applying time-tested fundamentals - demonstrate that
improved results can be achieved, no matter how unique the obstacles. |

We help communities understand
the critical elements that drive reform and embrace
the best practices that make standards work. We
help them see that high expectations, a rigorous
curriculum, content-centered professional development,
and accountability measures all must be aligned.
We build support – both within and outside
the school system – for using performance
data to drive instruction. |

 |
We serve as catalysts for
change by engaging key stakeholders, designing
effective processes, and focusing participants
on the right outcomes. As outcomes drive change,
we show stakeholders how new information can be
used in actionable ways, thereby creating
a culture that accepts systemic change and is
able to adapt to new challenges. |

Schools aren’t islands
unto themselves; they are integral parts of a
community. Their success depends on the support
they receive from - and ownership that is felt
by - parents, students, businesses, civic organizations,
and political leaders. We work deep in the community
to champion high expectations, empower parents,
and teach community-based organizations how to
become effective partners in the educational enterprise.

 |
StandardsWork is a “do
tank”. Still, many challenges that affect
students and schools are national in scope and
we are often invited to help government leaders
and other national organizations introduce fresh
ideas to longstanding or newly emerging challenges.
Since we are grounded in “real work”,
we are able to advocate for effective practices
that will both be well-received and have the potential
to create a positive impact on student performance
nationally.
